Senators plot Sen. Ndume’s suspension
A sinister plot is brewing in the Senate to suspend former majority leader, Sen. Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) over his motion that led to investigation against the Senate President Bukola Saraki and Senator Dino Melaye (APC, Kogi West), Ndume who was removed as Senate Leader in January, raised a point of order last week notifying the Senate of media reports alleging that the Senate was on vengeance against the Customs Comptroller-General, Hameed Ali over a seized SUV car allegedly belonging to Saraki. He also said that there were reports that Sen. Dino Melaye possessed a fake Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria certificate. As a result of the allegations, Senators are plotting to send Sen. Ndume on suspension.
Boko Haram attacked Borno communities, 10 kidnapped – Official
Boko Haram insurgents attacked communities in Konduga LGA of Borno State kidnapping 10 people, an official said. Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Borno, said the terrorists invaded Konduga and abducted 4 women and 6 youths. Mr. Abdullahi told NAN in Maiduguri on Tuesday that the insurgents had also invaded Mittiri, Akalli and Arribbari villages in the same Konduga LGA. “Our intelligence report had indicated that the insurgents are now operating in Dalla Fatimiri on about 10 motorcycles.
“Our men of Anti-vandalism and Intelligence Unit of the Command on Friday reported the kidnapping of four youths in Kalari village in Konduga local government area,” he said.
Ex-Adamawa Governor Jailed For Corruption On Bail
A former governor of Adamawa state, Bala James Ngilari, sentenced to 5 years’ jail for corruption has been granted bail to seek medicare after just 20 days in prison. Ngilari is the first major figure successfully prosecuted by the Buhari administration. State prosecutors objected but were overruled Monday at the Yola High Court. Justice Nathan Musa ordered Ngilari’s release on bail after 2 prison officials testified he suffered from high blood pressure and his health was deteriorating. Three weeks ago Justice Musa convicted Ngilari of improperly awarding a $1 billion contract to buy 25 vehicles in 2015.
Adamawa Prison authorities deny knowledge of Ngilari’s release, to query officials
Peter Tenkwa, the controller of the Adamawa state command of the Nigeria Prison Service (NPS), said that all the officers involved in the release of the ex-governor of Adamawa state, will be queried. On March 6, Ngilari was sentenced to 5 years in prison, without an option of fine, for violating the public procurement act in the award of contract for the procurement of 25 vehicles. But on Monday, Ngilari who was convicted for corruption and jailed in Yola was granted bail on health grounds. The ex-governor was granted bail in the sum of N100 million with two sureties, who must deposit certificates of occupancy of landed property owned in Yola.
Yola Prison has health facilities to take care of Ngilari
Peter Tenkwa, the controller of the Adamawa state command of the Nigeria Prison Service, speaking with journalists on Monday, said the Yola prison has health facilities that could take care of Ngilari. He said he was yet to get a release order granting the ex-governor bail. “Nigeria Prison Service, as I stated, knows nothing about this letter; whoever wrote that letter is on his own. I have been directed to query the officers involved,” Tenkwa said. “We have enough medical facilities to handle high-profile inmates like Ngilari; we even received some supply of drugs on Friday.” Also speaking with journalists, Bala Sanga, the Adamawa state attorney-general and commissioner for justice, said bail granted to the ex-governor “is scandalous”. He said the court could not use a document that was not before it to grant Ngilari bail.
Magu denies owning 2 mansions in Maitama, Abuja
The embattled acting Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, has debunked reports that he owns two mansions in Maitama, Abuja. A report claimed that Magu was under probe over two mansions allegedly linked to his wife. According to the report, “the houses being investigated are located in Danube Street, Maitama and Missouri Street, off Colorado Close, Ministers Hill,” addding that they were purchased in 2016. In his reaction, Magu described the report as a work of fiction and threatened to take legal action against the news platform. The EFCC boss maintained that neither himself nor his wife owned any property in Maitama. In a statement signed by the EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwajaren, Magu said, “I don’t have any mansion anywhere in Maitama. Would I have two mansions in Abuja yet choose to live in a rented apartment in the same community?
Obasanjo’s wife files suit to stop son’s wedding
The wife of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Mrs. Taiwo Obasanjo (photoright: with OBJ) on Monday filed a suit at an Ikeja high court, seeking to stop the wedding of her son, Olujonwo Obasanjo, scheduled for May 11. Ex-President Obasanjo and the bride’s father, Chief Kessington Adebutu (photo below left: Chief Adebutu, center pic), promoter of premier lotto known as ‘Baba Ijebu’ are respondents to the suit. Taiwo is seeking a postponement of the wedding of her son. She wants the wedding to be fixed for a date after June 1. Taiwo is seeking a court declaration that as the mother of the groom, she has the rights to take part in the deliberations, decisions and activities leading to the forthcoming ceremony. According to her, wedding invitations have been sent out and she has been excluded from the preparations for the ceremonies. She wants the court to compel Adebutu and Obasanjo to shift the wedding to a date after June 1. Justice Lateefa Okunnu has fixed April 10 for hearing of the suit no. ID/262FPM/2017.
Customs impound senator’s 13 vehicles
Customs agents have sealed a senator’s house in Kano where they also impounded13 Toyota Hilux vans and a Land Cruiser Jeep suspected to have been smuggled into the country. Officials of the Nigerian Customs’ Comptroller General Special Compliance Task Force carried out the operation on Monday. Leader of the special task force, Chief Superintendent of Custom, Bala Dole, confirmed the seizure to newsmen in Kano. A source at Customs Headquarters in Kano told Daily Trust yesterday that no one had come forward to claim ownership of the vehicles. “As I am speaking with you now, nobody has approached us to claim ownership of the vehicles. They are under our custody and the house where the cars were kept has been sealed by our men,” he said. The source added that the operation was carried out based on a tipoff.
Senate’s N298m car carries fake document – Importer
Reports emerged on Monday that the SUV bullet-proof car purchased by the Senate at N298million was bearing fake documents. The importer Tokunbo Akindele told the Senate Ethics committee investigating the matter that it was discovered in January, this year that the car carried a fake document. He said the car was not imported for Senate president, Bukola Saraki and that at the time the vehicle was imported, it was not for his use. “There was no document received at the National Assembly. The clearing documents were fake, this we found out in January 2017,” he said. The CEO of Lanre Shittu Motors, Chief Olarenwaju Shittu explained that the car was sold to the Senate. The public hearing continues today with the Nigeria Customs Service.
Dino Melaye wears academic gown to Senate
Chairman of the Senate Committee on FCT, Senator Dino Melaye (APC, Kogi West) appeared at the Senate on Tuesday morning wearing an academic gown. Sen. Melaye who has been in the news over an alleged possession of fake results from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria arrived the Red Chamber around 10.30am. He moved from one seat to the other greeting his colleagues. It will be recalled that the Vice Chancellor of ABU, Professor Ibrahim Garba had on Monday cleared Melaye, saying he graduated at the Institution with 3rd class honors division.
Sen. Dino Melaye mocks critics on social media
Se. Dino Melaye representing Kogi West, has taken to the social media to mock his critics after the Vice-Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, testified before the Senate Committee on Ethics And Privileges that he graduated from the university. Dino had been caught up in a certificate scandal after online news platform SaharaReporters claimed he did not graduate from ABU. On Thursday, after several twists to the scandal resulting in an investigation by the Senate and a N5bn suit against SaharaReporters, ABU’s VC told the Senate Committee that Sen. Dino Melaye indeed graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Geography, 3rd Class.
No link to any certificate scandal – Jonathan
Former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan debunked reports which included him as one of the prominent Nigerians linked to certificate scandals. In a statement issued on Monday by his media adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan dismissed the claim as lies, stressing that he had “never been linked to any doubt, scandal or controversy concerning his academic qualifications”. According to the statement, “Our attention has been drawn to a story by a national newspaper of March 26 edition where Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was mentioned as one of the ‘prominent Nigerians with certificate scandals’. We really don’t know where this is coming from, but we wish to remain unambiguous in our assertion that this is obvious falsehood, since the former president has never been linked to any doubt, scandal or controversy concerning his academic qualifications. We are not aware of any probe, allegation or litigation relating to his very well known academic qualifications . . .”
