Boko Haram Releases 82 Kidnapped Chibok Girls

The Nigerian-based Islamist group, Boko Haram, has released a batch of more than 80 of the Chibok high school girls who were abducted in mid-April 2014 from their dormitories in the dead of night. News of the latest release of some of the Chibok girls by the Boko Haram came from a top military source.

According to the source, the release of the 80 abducted school girls came after further negotiations between the Islamist group and the Buhari administration. The source said he was not in a position to disclose the terms of an agreement that led to the mass release of the Chibok school girls.

The 82 girls who just regained their freedom were in Banki town in Borno state awaiting airlift to Abuja to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari.

The 82 Chibok girls released by the Boko Haram on Saturday have arrived the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, disclosed this on his Twitter handle, @FemAdesina.

He said the girls were received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Sunday by the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kari, on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“82 Chibok girls now in Abuja. Received on behalf of the President at the airport by Chief of Staff, Alhaji Abba Kyari. Congrats Nigeria,” Adesina wrote.

He said the girls were received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Sunday by the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kari, on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The girls’ arrival in Abuja is ahead of their formal presentation to the President later in the day.  They would  be meeting President Buhari at about 4.00p.m today.

The Presidency had on Saturday said security agencies took back the 82 freed Chibok girls in exchange for some Boko Haram suspects held by the authorities.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in a statement on Saturday said Buhari is ” . . . pleased to announce that negotiations to release more of the Chibok Girls have born fruit with the release of 82 more girls today . . . “
