Imam & 20 Others Killed in Niger State Herdsmen Attack

The Imam of Etogi village in Gbara ward of Mokwa Local Government Area in Niger State was among the 21 persons reportedly killed by suspected herdsmen on Saturday morning. The imam was said to be leading 20 other faithful in an early morning prayer, when the herdsmen attacked them with dangerous weapons and embarked on a killing spree.

An eyewitness said those injured had been taken to the Mokwa General Hospital for treatment. He told ThisDay that the attack by the herdsmen was a reprisal for killing of a herdsman by the villagers during a disagreement. He said the disagreement occurred between some Fulani youths and members of the community.

The herdsmen were said to have maintained a settlement near the community on the understanding that a percentage of the proceeds from their harvest would go to the village head. However a disagreement was said to have ensued when the herdsmen failed to remit the agreed fee to the village head at the end of the last cropping season. The herdsmen, it was learnt, later claimed that the parcel of land belonged to them.

But the community was said to have demanded for the agreed amount, a development that led to a free for all fight, resulting in the death of one of the herdsmen. This was said to have infuriated the herdsmen who reportedly mobilized support and unleashed mayhem on the villagers on Saturday morning, leading to the death of the 21 persons. Police public relations officer in the state, DSP Bala Elkana, when contacted, confirmed the incident, but said “20 people were killed during the early morning attack”.

Arik & Aero may merge as national carrier

The Nigerian government is considering a possible option of a merger and conversion of assets of Arik Air and Aero Contractors in the buildup to a new national carrier for Nigeria.

The option, according to sources, is due to the alleged debt burden of the two beleaguered airlines. In the wake of their indebtedness, the federal government had intervened through the takeover by the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON). Both airlines have since the intervention proven not to be promising in terms of operations and debt payment.

The conversion plan, though already faulted by some stakeholders, will further reduce private domestic operations to six airlines, with the attendant debt burden and legal issues for the prospective national carrier.

Buhari’s top aide in trouble over attempt to usurp Osinbajo’s powers

A top aide of President Muhammadu Buhari is in trouble over the role he allegedly played prior to the departure of the president to the United Kingdom for medical treatment, last week. There were indications, last night, that the aide might be probed for this action.

Osinbajo 2

A top government source told Vanguard, last night, that the latest offence that got the President very upset was the attempt by the said aide to breach the clear provisions of the Constitution regarding the transfer of power to the Vice President ahead of Buhari’s departure, last week, for his medical follow-up in the UK.

The source said last night, “In fact, the man in question had actually drafted a letter meant for the president’s signature two days to Buhari’s departure stating that “the powers of the Acting President be limited” while he ( the aide in question) be authorized to coordinate things in a “broad sense until Buhari returns”. “In the letter drafted by the controversial official for Buhari to sign, the officer also suggested that Osinbajo be restrained from taking any action on the Economy, Foreign Currency operations and the Central Bank of Nigeria among other strategic agencies of the government pending the return of Buhari.

“Mr. President however shocked the aide largely believed to have won his heart by promptly rejecting the suggestions by taking the unprecedented bold step to personally meet with his Vice and the NASS leaders and brief them on the transfer of power to his Vice before leaving Nigeria for the U.K. . . .”
