The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Sen. Aliyu Sabi Abdullah, declared on Friday that the rejection of Ibrahim Magu as the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) “still stands.” The Senate spokesperson was reacting to Thursday declaration by the Presidency that Magu will remain the EFCC boss irrespective of Senate’s demand for his ouster.

The Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, on Friday fired back at the Senate, saying all he needs to prosecute the war against corruption in Nigeria is the “backing of the President and his Vice.” Magu made the declaration when he received some civil society groups at the EFCC’s zonal office in Kano. Magu said, inter alia: “ . . . I think the backing of the President and his vice is enough for us to win the fight and we shall win it, no doubt about that, the end of this fight is just around the corner.”

The Nigerian Army on Thursday sent a very strong warning to advocates of the country’s breakup, saying it will continue to work hard in ensuring that the country is kept as one. Speaking at the 2017 Nigerian Army Day celebration held at the Army Resource Centre, Mambila Barracks, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai, said: “ . . . There is a very sound civil military relationship between the army and Nigerians. In all our operations in the North East, South- South, South East and all other parts of the country, we have always maintained civil/military relationship”

The President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, on Thursday night held a secret meeting with the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo in the presidential villa in Abuja. Saraki’s visit may not be unconnected with developments in the Senate. The Senate had suspended all considerations of further nominations by the presidency in protest against the retention of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, and the consequent threats of impeachment of Osinbajo by some Senators. No official statement was released by the Acting President’s office or the Senate President’s office.

The acting Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, said the Boko Haram insurgency, current agitations for Biafra and restructuring is financed by looters of the country’s treasury over the years. Magu spoke at a stakeholder’s meeting in Kano: “ . . . Corruption is a threat to the unity of this country and we must fight, despite the stumblingly blocks . . . Agitations of restructuring the nation, Biafra and even Book Haram are being financed by looters of the country. The looters are ready to continue sponsoring all these violence against the state just to create confusion to distract attention against them. But that will not succeed.

The President General of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief John Nnia Nwodo has called on separatist groups in the south-east to perish the thought of a separate nation for the Igbo race. Nwodo was talking tough to MASSOB, IPOB and Igbo leaders. In a statement made available to newsmen, Chief Nwodo told a cross section of Igbo leaders in Abuja on Thursday that no ethnic group has more stake in  the Nigerian project than the Igbo and as such could not consider a break up as a viable option. There is no part of Nigeria where Ndigbo have not invested their resources even without any corresponding investment from others in Igboland, Nwodo stated.

Dr Junaid Muhammad, a frontline Northern politician has warns the Igbo to read the effects of the Civil War from history, adding that the North is not afraid of war, in a Nigerian Tribune interview Muhammad said: Some of these youths and I are equally not happy with the kind of attitude and behaviour of the Igbo through IPOB . . . not a pure Nnamdi Kanu phenomenon. It is an Igbo elite phenomenon. They are behind this body and they are the ones financing and sponsoring them. The South-East leaders have the impression that through blackmailing and intimidation of all Nigerians . . . they can achieve political domination over other Nigerians. As far back as 1940, late Chief Mbano Ugwe said then that Igbo domination of Nigeria was a matter of time. If the Igbo think they can challenge other people, they should equally rest assured that there will be a counter challenge from others.
