Fed Govt. to block IPOB funding sources

The Federal Government says it is aware of sources of funding of the Indigenous People of Biafra ( IPOB ) and is taking steps to block them. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed disclosed this on Tuesday when he appeared on a live TV programme “Good Morning Nigeria” on the Nigeria Television Authority ( NTA ). “Terrorists do not publish where their funding are coming from. But we know the countries that are supporting IPOB.

INEC, Serve Melaye recall papers — Court

A FEDERAL High Court in Abuja has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make further attempt to ensure personal services of documents relating to the recall of Senator Dino Melaye on him. Justice Nnamdi Dimgba gave the directive yesterday when INEC informed the court about its ex-parte motion for substituted service. INEC said its motion was informed by its inability to serve Melaye with the petition for his recall and other list of voters, who endorsed the petition.

North’s governors launched yesterday a peace move in the Southeast. Five from the North visited Rivers and Abia states, preaching peace. They also addressed Northerners, telling them to remain calm, following the tension generated by the activities of the separatist Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The governors were led by Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima. Others are Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Simon Lalong (Plateau), Aminu Masari (Katsina) and Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi).

Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) Chairman Prof Itse Sagay (SAN) yesterday backed the military’s declaration of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist organisation. He said he agreed with the Defence Headquarters’ description of IPOB as a terror group even if he was not sure whether the army complied with legal requirements in making the pronouncement.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) yesterday declared that no intimidation or harassment from any quarter will make it retreat. The group described its proscription by the Southeast governors and the declaration of it as a terrorist organisation by the Defence Headquarters as actions that could not stand. IPOB said a referendum to determine a sovereign state of Biafra would compensate the people. In a statement yesterday, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary Emma Powerful, said it wondered why herdsmen that had several that had several times caused havoc in various parts of the country had not been declared a terrorist organisation. IPOB said: “It is also on record that till date, no police commissioner or governor in the South East or South South has dared to rise up against the fourth deadliest  terrorist group in the world we know as Fulani herdsmen.

APC . CHANGESoutherners, especially the Igbo are safe in the North, the All Progressives Congress (APC) said yesterday. The party also reaffirmed its stand on the sanctity of Nigeria’s unity, saying it would not support any attempts at disintegration. APC Deputy National Chairman (North) Senator Lawal Shuaibu, in a statement, yesterday said the party, while not interfering with the statutory work of the security agencies, would continue to do everything possible to guarantee security of lives and property in all parts of the country.

Military begins withdrawal from Aba: Report

According to reports, the Nigerian Army has begun a gradual withdrawal of its men stationed at various checkpoints in Aba after last week’s clash with protesting members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu told reporters last weeks in Umuahia that the military was withdrawing soldiers from the state. Investigation by NAN yesterday showed that only few of the new military checkpoints mounted in the commercial city had been dismantled.  The five military checkpoints mounted on the busy Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway had been reduced to three. Activities are gradually returning to normal in Aba. Markets have re-opened after the five-day dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed on the city by the governor.

ASUU suspends strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has conditionally suspended their five weeks old strike embarked upon to press for the implementation of agreements reached with the government. It directed its members to return to the classroom with immediately. President of the Union, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi who addressed a news conference at about 9.30 pm Monday night after another round of meeting with the government delegation led by the Minister of Labour, Senator Chris Ngige, directed all members of the the union to return to work after their branch congresses on Tuesday. He said they decided to conditionally suspend the strike action in view of the timeline of October 2017 for the implementation of the signed agreement.

Army did not declare IPOB terrorist organisation — Buratai

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai on Monday evening stated that the Defence Headquarters did not declare the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB a terrorist organization in the country. Speaking during the official launch of Operation Python Dance II in Abakaliki, the Army Chief who argued that what the Defence Headquarters did was a pronouncement on IPOB added that the statement of the military gave room for the right steps to be taken on the matter.
According to Buratai, the action of the Federal government concerning IPOB was right and that the military did not over step its bound towards the protection of lives and properties in the country. You have to get it very clear. First of all, what the Defence Headquarters did was to make pronouncement. It wasn’t a declaration per se. But this has given room for the right step to be taken. I think the government is doing the right thing. “It is not that we are overstepping our bounds. We are still within the limits. And I ensure you that what the military said was to set the ball rolling and to bring the awareness to the public that this is what this organization is all about. I’m happy that the government has done the right thing right now.”

Suspected suicide bombers on Monday killed at least 12 people and injured 26 others in Borno State, the chairman of the state emergency management agency said. The attack is the latest in a series of bombings in the restive northeast that had killed at least 200 people since June 1 this year, Reuters said.

IPOB using fake videos to hoodwink international community – Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government on Monday in Lagos accused the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of using fake videos of mass killings, to mislead the international community and win their support. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who stated this when he addressed Online Publishers, said that the fake videos were harvested from other parts of Africa and doctored to look current.

Senate to meet security chiefs over IPOB & tension in the southeast

Senate President Bukola Saraki said yesterday that the Senate would meet with security chiefs to chart a path for resolution of contentious issues generating tension in the South-East. He said that the meeting would address the tension in the South-East and the skirmishes in Plateau. Saraki said security agencies, political and religious leaders must work for the promotion of dialogue as means for tackling agitations to ensure peace.
