Oil marketers ‘doublecross’ FG after pump price hike

Is another fuel scarcity looming?

Reports say oil marketers have not resumed importation of petrol since the increase in pump price by the federal government. A government official who spoke with reporters described it as “a stab in the back” – as another fuel crisis looms.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) had been the sole importer of PMS but a crippling crisis ensued as the corporation could not get enough foreign exchange from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) at the official rate of N197/$1. The corporation was also overwhelmed by the volume of importation.

Nnamdi Kanu . Appeal Court deny him bail

No bail for Biafra leader, Nnamdi Kanu – Appeal Court

IPOB leader and director of the pirate Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has been denied bail by an Appeal Court sitting in Abuja. A three man panel of Court of Appeal led by Justice Abdul Aboki has affirmed the judgment of Justice James Tsoho of Federal High Court denying Nnamdi Kanu bail.

The appellate court said the Federal High Court properly exercised its discretion judiciously and judicially in denying bail to Kanu and two others being tried by the Federal Government for treason.

The appellate court in a unanimous decision ruled that there was enough facts in the proof of evidence filed before the court to show that the appellants do not deserve bail.

Appeal court dismisses Metuh’s ‘No-Case’ application

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has dismissed the application filed by the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh, challenging the ruling delivered by Justice Okon Abang, of an Abuja Federal High Court, against his no case submission. Metuh had approached the appelate court to challenge the ruling by Justice Abang against his no case submission, alleging that the said ruling had pre-determined his (Metuh) position in the trial, ahead of its determination.

He had prayed, through his counsel, Onyeachi Ikpeazu SAN, for the Court to determine whether the questions posed by Justice Abang ahead of the ruling were not meant to shift the burden of proof against him. Justice Abang had earlier ruled that if Metuh fails to make the necessary clarifications, then he would be proving that he was aware of the source of the funds thereby proving the allegations against him to be right. The three man panel, of the court of appeal led by Justice Abdul Aboki, however, held that the questions were in order, and that Metuh ought to open his case and proceed with his defence. The court subsequently dismissed the application for lacking in merit.

Metuh is standing trial alongside his company, Destra Investment Limited, on a 7-count charges, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), for allegedly receiving N400million from former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuk (Rtd.)

CBN . Godwin Emefiele, Gov. CBN

New Forex Policy Out Soon – CBN

A more flexible foreign exchange policy would soon become operational in the country, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said yesterday. CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, while briefing journalists after the two-day Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting,  said the apex bank would release a new guideline on the management of foreign exchange in the country within the next few days.

The MPC mandated the CBN to adopt a flexible exchange rate system, to allow for inflow of foreign exchange and needed investment. The bank had been under pressure over the last few months to either devalue the Naira or adopt a flexible exchange rate policy.
